Parkinsons Center
The Smithtown Parkinson Therapy Center is a unique organization founded more than thirty years ago to provide help and hope to Parkinson patients and families. It is the only physical therapy center on Long Island that caters exclusively to Parkinson's and its particular problems. The Center conducts an on-going program of exercise and physical therapy, specifically tailored to the needs of each individual patient and administered by a staff doctor, licensed physical therapist, professional registered nurse, speech pathologist and trained aides. The Center also runs support group sessions for both the patient and caregiver monthly. The group meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 9:15 to 11:15, permitting the scheduling of maximum activity for the individual patient. Regular attendance is encouraged. Patients are given individual therapy by a qualified physical therapist and participate with the group in daily conditioning exercises. Patients are seen by a staff ' doctor on a rotating basis or whenever a specific need occurs. A coffee break is included in each daily session during which a group discussion, seminar or guest speaker is presented.
