Our Pastor's Message

So it was that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.  And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:6-7 (New King James Bible)

Dear Smithtown Family,

On that first Christmas night, a lowly manger stood in a barn.  It was made of roughly cut, unvarnished wood, very simple in appearance and generally used just for feeding the barnyard animals.  The manger was nothing to look at but it was surely in the right place at the right time for a young pregnant girl and her loving husband who needed somewhere to lay their newborn baby. I wonder if that manger could talk what would it say.  It might be grateful that God had seen fit to use it so prominently in this miracle.  Or maybe it might express surprise that God could find use in such a lowly everyday item. Or the manger might be joyful, that somehow, it had just the right elements needed to cradle the Divine Christ Child.  God could have chosen anywhere palatial or special for Jesus to rest but God chose the manger.  Friends, though the manger couldn’t talk, it still communicates to us something about God:  that no matter who we are, or what status we have in the world, or even how we view ourselves as worthy or not, God can use us to make a difference in this world. That is one message we receive at Christmas time.  As followers of Christ, let us joyfully celebrate Christ’s birth and be committed to allowing God to use us in his kingdom in the coming months and years of our lives.

Christmas, as always at Smithtown UMC is a busy season. We have a number of activities going on in the next few weeks. You can find these important dates in The Scroll newsletter that was emailed out this week. You may call the church office at 631-265-6945 for this information.  I hope you will be able to join us at these special times.

All the best in this special season from my family and me.

In Christ’s service,

Pastor Carole
